Technology

TECHNOLOGY

The fundamental purpose of the Technological Education program is to provide students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enhance their ability to achieve success in secondary school, the workplace, postsecondary education and training, and daily life.

BROADCAST JOURNALISM

The focus of Broadcast Journalism is to provide an intensive overview of the numerous aspects of live and taped programming for Radio and Television.  After students have been introduced to the basics of writing, reporting, programming and operation of technical resources, they are encouraged to focus and master one or two speciality areas:  Reporting, Directing, and Producing, Production and Digital Design, Editing or Audio Production and Post-Production.  Emphasis is placed on a team approach, and by using industry production practices as reference, students will complete a variety of projects specific to their area of specialty.  By the end of the programme, students will be able to showcase their technical skills and creativity by developing an independent demo reel that will offer a clear representation of their talents.

HAIRSTYLING & AESTHETICS

In Grade 11 the focus is on aesthetics and hairstyling.  You will develop skills in manicures, waxing, air brushing, fashion makeup, hairstyling and develop knowledge in bacteriology and decontamination procedures.  You will be able to put these talents to work in the salon, in school productions and volunteer activities.

In Grade 12 you will further develop your  talents in hair cutting, colouring, perming, special effects makeup and salon business skills.  Both grades participate in exciting career exploration trips to an International Makeup School and Professional Hair Shows.  Students are also able to compete for representation in the Skills Ontario Competition.

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is a great avenue for those who are considering a career in hairstyling.  Learning could not be more fun and rewarding.  The career possibilities are endless!

HOSPITALITY

YEARBOOK

This course is designed for the students who want an in-depth experience in photojournalism and the production of a yearbook.  Yearbook is a challenging course in which students have the unique opportunity to write a book, prepare a publication for printing, run a business, and record history.  This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to work with advanced technology, strengthen their analytical and problem-solving skills, improve their communication skills, and manage tremendous responsibility.

Student will use PC computers, PageMaker 7.0/6.5, and Photoshop software for designing and producing the yearbook.  Yearbook students practice the fundamentals of journalistic writing, photojournalism, graphic design and budget management.  Students will also derive an incredible sense of accomplishment and develop their abilities in working together as a team as they work together to produce the book.

Although this course is a production course and more relaxed in setting, the amount and intensity of the work required for this class is not less if not more than the work for one of your core academic subjects.  Come to this class prepared to have fun, but be prepared to work hard as well!  The amount of effort you put into this class will determine what you get our of this class.  I  hope that this course will be one of the highlights of your highschool career.
