DRAMATIC ARTS

Acting, Directing, Producing, Set Design, Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Technical Theatre (Sound, Lighting, Scenery, Carpentry, Special Effects, Foley Art, Riggers), Broadcasting, Playwriting, Critics, TV/Film Crew, Voice Over Artists, Journalism, Camera Operators, TV/Radio Host or Personality, etc. …… all begin with a foundation in Dramatic Arts/Theatre!

The Grade 9 and 10 Drama courses introduce dramatic forms and structures utilized in the theatre world such as tableau, mime & pantomime, movement, voice acting, foley art, improv, monologues, radio drama, ritual/clowning, etc.  Performances will be completed in both ensembles (groups) and independently.  The focus is on collaboration, skill/technique development, and Creative and Critical Analysis Processes application in the junior grades.

Following the foundation established in the junior grades, students are encouraged to continue their studies at the senior level—the emphasis shifts to more technical aspects such as Theatre History, Theatre Practitioners, and the honing of their craft as actors.   Units of study in grades 11 and 12 include Sketch Comedy, Greek Tragedy, Shakespearean Monologues, Theatre History/Practitioners, Commedia dell’Arte, Waiting for Godot (Theatre of the Absurd), and Stage Combat.  The grade 12 course culminates with Stage 12, a summative after-school performance to showcase student development as a budding thespian before continuing their post-secondary studies in the theatre world!

MUSIC

If you like listening to music, you should try performing it.  The people you see on stage and in videos look like they’re having a good time because…THEY ARE!

St. John’s College offers courses in Music for students in grade 9 to grade 12.  If you love to sing, then our Vocal courses are designed for you!  If learning to play an instrument is appealing, our instrumental courses are where it’s at.  St. John’s College bands have performed at the Nationals for the past four years in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography courses a St. John’s College are focused on developing both technical skills and visual awareness.  From the pinhow camer, trational film and darkroom processes to digital photography, student learn to communicate visually!

VISUAL ART

Following the Foundation Course, students can continue in Comprehensive Visual Art, or specialized courses in Photography.  Fashion Design or Information and Consumer Design.
